Sussex County Jail Roster

The Sussex County, New Jersey jail roster is a public resource that allows you to find out who is currently in custody at the county jail. SussexNJCourt.us helps locate publicly available information about current and recently released inmates. Additionally, information can be obtained through the official Sussex County Sheriff's website, by calling the jail, or visiting it in person. The roster is maintained by the Sussex County Sheriff's Office, which is responsible for the custody of detained individuals. The data is updated regularly to reflect changes in the inmate population. Searching the roster allows you to check the status of a specific individual, find out the charges filed, and the booking date.

Find Sussex Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created at the moment a detained person undergoes the booking process at the jail. It is the first official document that records the person's custody.

During booking, the following data is recorded:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of booking
  • Charges filed
  • Arresting agency (local police, Sheriff's law enforcement division, etc.)
  • Basic personal information of the detainee

There are several ways to access booking records online. The Sussex County Sheriff's website roster displays the current list of inmates. If you need records of criminal cases already in court, use the NJ Courts case search tool. It covers criminal, civil, and family cases being heard in the New Jersey Superior Court.

If you need access to records not available in the online roster, submit a request for public documents under the Open Public Records Act (OPRA). The request is sent to the Sheriff's Office or the appropriate court division.

Search the Sussex Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The inmate roster supports two main search methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the last name of the detained person. Optionally, you can specify the first name to narrow the results. A few tips:

  • Use exact spelling — the system is sensitive to errors
  • If the last name is complex or has multiple spellings, try different variations
  • On some roster pages, you can use the browser's search function (Ctrl+F or Cmd+F) to quickly find the name in the list

Search by Booking Number

The booking number is a unique identifier assigned during booking. It provides the most accurate result. This number is usually provided to relatives during the first contact with the jail.

What to Do If the Search Yields No Results

  1. Check the spelling of the name.
  2. Try simplifying the query — enter only the last name.
  3. Call the jail and inquire directly.
  4. The person may have already been released, transferred to another facility, or booked under a different name. In this case, a state-level search may help.

Criminal division court records for Sussex County are stored in the records room of the Sussex County Judicial Center at 43-47 High Street, Newton, NJ 07860.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Sussex

The Sussex County inmate roster is updated regularly, but not always in real-time. There may be a delay of several hours to one business day between the actual booking and the appearance of the record in the online system, depending on staff workload and time of day.

Main limitations to be aware of:

  • The roster only shows individuals who are currently in custody. After release or transfer, the record disappears.
  • This is not an archive of all past bookings. Historical data requires a separate request.
  • Data entry delays may occur at night or on weekends.
  • Records of individuals detained on warrants from other jurisdictions may temporarily not appear.

If you need information on past bookings or court cases, contact the Superior Court Clerk's Office for copies of court records. For cases where the sentence involved state-level incarceration, use the Offender Search through the Parole Department.

Individuals whose records have been expunged (removed by court order) will not appear in any public database. You can apply for expungement through the eCourts Expungement system.
